ST. GEORGE’S, GRENADA –Grenadians now have visa-free access to Ghana and Benin, following the signing of landmark visa waiver agreements with the two West African nations on April 16. Effective immediately, the agreements allow Grenadians to enter, stay in, transit through, and depart from Ghana and Benin without a visa. This development marks a significant step in Grenada’s efforts to deepen its diplomatic and cultural connections with the African continent.
Under the agreement with Ghana, Grenadian nationals may stay for up to 30 days within any 180-day period, while the agreement with Benin permits stays of up to 90 days during the same timeframe. These arrangements apply to holders of diplomatic, official, service, or ordinary passports.
Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, Roxie Hutchinson, emphasised the significance of these agreements, stating, “These visa waiver agreements mark a significant achievement in our ongoing efforts to strengthen relations between Grenada, Ghana, and Benin. By removing this barrier, we are fostering greater opportunities for collaboration, cultural exchange, and economic partnership.”
The agreement with Ghana builds upon a series of diplomatic engagements between the two countries. Notably, in February 2024, Ghana’s then president, Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo, visited Grenada as the Guest of Honour for the nation’s 50th Independence Anniversary celebrations. This historic visit marked the first time a Ghanaian head of state had visited Grenada, symbolizing a renewed commitment to strengthening bilateral relations.
These visa waiver agreements are part of Grenada’s broader strategy to enhance global mobility for its citizens and to forge stronger ties with African nations. By facilitating easier travel, the agreements are expected to promote increased tourism, trade, and cultural exchanges, benefiting citizens and businesses in all three countries.
The governments of Grenada, Ghana, and Benin look forward to the opportunities these agreements will create, fostering deeper connections and mutual growth.
